Bring New Life To A Classic With The Best Uno Editions (5)

Uno is one of the most famous and popular card games around. It's beloved for its simple rules, nice-looking cards, and friendship-ruining gameplay. It's one of those games that everybody knows how to play, which makes it super easy to arrange games.

However, the original game is far from the only version of this classic. There are numerous variations. Some are simply aesthetic variations on the original game, while others have different mechanics that make the game more interesting, usually in cruel ways. Here are some of the best alternate versions of the classic Uno, varying in size, appearance, and gameplay, but not in spirit!

Updated August 17, 2024 by Davis Collins: Uno remains as classic as ever. In an age where tabletop games are increasing in prominence and complexity, there is more appetite than ever before for more complex variations of games everyone is familiar with. We've updated this list to include some additional variations that improve on what makes Uno a classic game, often by adding complexity in ways that will make the game more appealing to experienced gamers.

Most Wild

UNO All Wild

Distilled action cards

As you may guess from its name, Uno All Wild is a version of Uno where all cards are wild, and can be played on any other card, which makes the game all about its action cards

Pros

  • Boils Uno down to one of its funnest elements
  • Genuinely more strategic and less luck-based
  • Dense with exciting moments

See at Amazon

The most fun thing about Uno is its action cards. For the most part, strings of numbers exist to build tension between moments where more impactful cards like Draw Two, Reverse, and Skip are played. Uno All Wilds is a distillation of that element.

In this version, every card is wild. Every card can be played onto every other card. To ensure variety, there are additional types action cards available in this game. These additions include targeted Draw Twos that don't have to affect the next player, double skips, and cards that let you swap hands with someone else. All of this makes the game much more volatile and dynamic, while eliminating those frustrating moments where you don't have anything to play.

Best For Gamers

DOS

An evolution in complexity

Dos is a masterful bit of game design which takes a familiar game with broad appeal and adds the complexity and nuance it needs to appeal to experienced gamers with sophisticated tastes.

Pros

  • Makes the game more strategic and engaging
  • Holds the Uno spirit

Cons

  • Significantly more complex

See at Amazon

There are, broadly speaking, two kinds of tabletop game. First, there are games that are meant to be approachable to just about everyone, with simple rules, where the result is often determined mostly or entirely by luck. Uno is one of these. The second are complex games, designed to have strategic depth and minimize the role of chance. Dos is the result of an effort to turn Uno into one of these.

It does so well. Dos' changes to the game are not small. It adds a lot of meat to the game, making it so every turn involves more choices, and deliberately reducing the odds that good or bad luck will win or lose the game for you. If you're a hardcore gamer who wants a taste of this classic game but can only be satisfied by something more sophisticated, Dos is for you.

Best For Parties

UNO Dare! Edition

Amplifying the cruelty of this classic game.

In this variation of the classic game, every draw-2 card includes a dare that, if performed, will grant the player clemency from having to draw two cards. However, each of these dares is cruel in its own special way.

Pros

  • Well-formulated, interesting dares
  • Genuinely increases the skill element to this game

Cons

  • Many of the dares are physical challenges not everyone will be equally able to complete

See at Amazon

You know that meme format that shows a custom Uno card that demands someone either perform an oddly specific task or draw 25 cards? This game brings that meme into the real world. Every Draw 2 card in this game is linked to a different dare, and if you perform the dare successfully, you do not have to draw two cards. There are three different sets of dares, so you can choose the difficulty of the dares you'll be faced with.

The dares here are well-crafted. They could've easily created a game where the dares are so easy you always do them or so hard you never do them, but they did a good job striking a balance between those extremes, making dares challenging but not outrageous. That said, some of the dares are challenges of athleticism, which may give more fit players a significant advantage over older family members or people with disabilities.

Most Customizable

UNO Remix! Edition

Identify the king of your Uno tables

This version of the game contains special cards with blanks to be filled in. Promotional material recommends using this to keep track of who has played what cards in the past, but that's just one of many things you can do with these tools.

Pros

  • Blank cards to be customized however you wish
  • Keep track of the winners of your family games

Cons

  • You will eventually run out of stickers and blank cards

See at Amazon

The remix edition is the slightest variation on the original Uno to be featured on this list. There are just two changes. First, there's a sheet of stickers designed to help you keep track of who in your group is winning the most Uno games. That's great, but that's not why Remix is on this list. It's here because of the blank cards.

The instructions for the game suggest writing players' names on these cards, and you can certainly do that if you want, but there are also far more creative uses for blank cards. Uno is about screwing people over, and these blank cards allow you to make up the cruelest rules you can imagine, perhaps even targeted at specific people, and insert them into your deck. There are infinite possibilities for malicious fun. The only limit is your imagination!

Biggest Cards

Giant UNO

Uno, But Bigger

$15 $25 Save $10

Giant Uno doesn't take a lot of explaining, as it's just the regular game of Uno, but with much larger cards. There are also some customizable ones in the deck, each with plenty of room to wrire on.

Pros

  • Adds extra embarrassment to anyone forced to draw a bunch of cards, as they're harder to hold
  • Cards are sturdy
  • Hard to misplace cards of this size

Cons

  • The large cards take up a lot of room

See at Amazon$15 at Walmart

Not every unique Uno edition needs to make a large change to the original game. Sometimes a small one is enough, though, it does feel a bit wrong to call the change this game makes "small."

Each card in this Uno deck is triple the size of an ordinary Uno card. This changes more than you might think. The comedically large cards add a layer of amusem*nt to everything. They're harder to misplace, and easier to read. The cards being so darn big makes it extra nice to see someone be forced to draw a ton of them (though holding a large hand can get a bit uncomfortable).

Biggest Oh-Crap Moments

UNO Flip!

One flip card, and everything can change

$5 $11 Save $6

In Uno Flip, each card has a light and dark side. The light side is an ordinary Uno card, but when someone plays a flip card, the cards are flipped to their dark sides, which are far more punishing.

Pros

  • The flip mechanic adds a layer of unpredictability
  • Includes a wider variety of draw cards
  • More options means more strategy

See at Amazon$5 at Walmart

Uno Flip cards have two sides. The light side is an ordinary Uno card. However, when one of the new Flip cards is played, the cards get turned over to their dark sides, which are significantly crueler. Not only does a flip suddenly change the color and number of all your cards, the special cards are now more punishing. This adds a layer of unpredictability and excitement to the game. The moment a flip card is played is always super exciting.

Best Practical Gimmick

UNO Flip Attack

Despair as the cards zoom toward you

This fusion of two of Uno's more popular spin-offs offers the added complexity of Flip along with the added coolness and tension of another variation, Uno Attack, where a machine is used to randomly bombard players with cards.

Pros

  • Everything Uno Flip offers
  • Gameplay incorporates a fun machine

See at Amazon

Uno Flip Attack is a fusion of two existing variations on the game, Uno Flip, the item above, and Uno Attack, a version of the game which incorporates a machine capable of spitting out a random number of cards. The machine may be pure luck from a mechanical standpoint, but it's still a fun source of tension, and its presence in a more complex and engaging version of the game makes the experience all the more fun.

Best Enhancement

UNO Ultimate Marvel

Save The Day While Winning Uno

This game is not just a marvel-themed reskin of the original Uno. This game contains a bunch of new, interesting rules. Cards have a wide variety of effects. If you're a gamer looking for a more complex version of this classic game, this is the item for you.

Pros

  • Unique take on Uno
  • Great presentation
  • Includes four iconic playable heroes

Cons

  • Harder to understand than regular Uno

See at Amazon$11 at Walmart

Uno Ultimate Marvel transforms Uno into a more intricate and fleshed-out tabletop game. Each of the heroes in this game has its own deck of cards, many of which have unique abilities, and there's a "danger deck" that adds even more complications.

The core mechanics of this game are the same, but way, way more has been built on that skeleton. If you like Uno, or even just the idea of it, but have a taste for more intricate game design, this is the product for you. Plus, any fan of Marvel board games will love it!

Most Brutal

UNO Show ‘em No Mercy

The Real Friendship Destroyer

$10 $26 Save $16

The Show 'em No Mercy version of Uno is the most brutal. This version adds extra cards and rules designed to make your opponent's hands bigger, and then punish them for getting too big. If you like the sadism of Uno, this game is for you.

Pros

  • The game is great at screwing with people, which is what Uno is all about
  • Includes draw ten cards
  • Nice darker color scheme

Cons

  • Might be too much for easily frustrated players

See at AmazonSee at Amazon$10 at Walmart

As has been repeatedly stated throughout this article, Uno is about screwing people over, and no version of the game embodies that quite like Show 'Em No Mercy. This game takes the brutality of making your opponents draw cards and amplifies it enormously. There are Draw 6 cards, Draw 10 cards, Skip Everyone cards that let you play again immediately, Draw 4 Wild Reverse cards, and so many more.

To make it all that much worse, when your hand gets twenty-five cards in it, as it easily can, you're out of the game! You can win this one just by being the last one standing. In truth, this is one of the more merciful elements of this game. It would be crueler to leave such players in the game and force them to try to play down such enormous hands.

Best Crossover

UNO Mario Kart

Watch Out For Banana Peels And Green Shells

Once again, this is not just a reskin. The Mario Kart theming is integrated into the mechanics, for a more complicated but correspondingly richer experience.

Pros

  • Items are a clever way to incorporate Mario Kart into Uno
  • Nice art of kart racers on the cards

See at Amazon$11 at Walmart

There's something about the spirit of both Uno and Mario Kart that the games have in common. Both games use relatively simple core mechanics to facilitate big moments of wrecking other players, be it with Shells or draw 4 wilds. Well, if you want to be able to use both Shells and Draw 4 Wilds, this game has you covered.

The Mario Kart version of Uno adds and item to the lower right corner of every card. When an item box is played, the item on the next card is activated, which can have a variety of effects, from giving players extra turns to forcing them to draw. All of that is on top of what is already a good-looking Mario-themed reskin of the game.

Best-Looking

UNO 50th Anniversary Edition

Highly Decorated

This version of Uno celebrates the game's 50th anniversary with its sleek, dark presentation of the game. It also adds a new 50 card, which forces two players to flip the anniversary coin to see who has to draw cards.

Pros

  • Cards look amazing
  • The 50 card adds an extra element of chance to the game

See at Amazon$15 at Walmart

Released to celebrate the 50 year anniversary of this classic game, this edition's darkened cards look incredible. This may be the most aesthetically pleasing version of Uno ever. Seriously, it looks amazing. It's like the entirety of Uno was set to dark mode, and it works really well.

The rules are the same. There's only one additional special card. As explained above, it forces its victim to flip a coin, and draw more cards if they lose. It's distinguished from other Uno cards in that it allows you to target a victim of your choice, making its use more strategic, though that's partially undone by the element of chance it involves.

FAQ

Which is the best UNO version?

This depends on what you're looking for, but Show 'Em No Mercy is one of our favorites. It takes what makes Uno great, the act of messing with your opponent by playing rude cards, and amplifies it to the most extreme extent possible. It's the most concentrated dose of Uno you can possibly get.

What Is The 7-0 Rule In Uno?

It's a variant rule some players use to make Uno a bit more interesting. It dictates that, whenever you play a 7 of any color, you get to swap hands with the player of your choice. Meanwhile, whenever anyone plays a 0, every player passes their hand on to the next person in the turn order.

How Many Editions Of Uno Are There?

There are currently over 600 different types of Uno. This list barely scratched the surface of what's out there.
