Central Cass' Elise Wisnewski caps ND state track meet with two wins, Kindred's Peraza takes boys triple jump (2024)

BISMARCK — Central Cass’ Elise Wisnewski capped off her high school track career with a pair of state championships and two runner-up finishes Saturday during the final day of the North Dakota State Track and Field Meet.

Wisnewski — who was also named the North Dakota High School Coaches Association’s 2024 Class B Girls Senior Athlete of the Year — started the day with a win in the 100-meter dash (12.2 seconds) and ended it with another win in the 200-meter dash (24.59 seconds).

In between she brought the Squirrels from seventh to second in her leg of the 4x200-meter relay and finished second in the 400-meter dash to Velva-Drake-Anamoose’s Anya Olson.

To finish the day strong, Wisnewski knew she had to stay loose after her full plate of events.

“I just knew to stay relaxed through my 200,” Wisnewsi said. “I had a pretty full day so I knew not to warm up too much for it or be too tired. I just had to get through this last event

“I wasn’t even disappointed with the 400 because I wasn’t even sure if I was going to do it this year. But, once I tried it, I did a lot better than my previous times. So I’m pretty happy with the 400.”

While she knows the Squirrels track program is in good hands, Wisnewski is sad to say goodbye to the team she’s gotten to know so well.

“It’s just really emotional leaving my teammates behind but I know they’ll keep our program running,” she said. “We have a lot of talented and athletic girls. It’s bittersweet.”

Among those Squirrels is seventh-grader Mayson Lynch, who placed third in the Class B girls high jump. Lynch credited her result to hard work.

“Pretty much every day we were jumping,” Lynch said. “At the beginning of the year I was jumping with the junior high kids and my PR was four feet. Now it’s five feet.”

Lynch said she was a little nervous before the start of the high jump. However, that the nerves quickly subsided.

“I was kind of stressed in the beginning but once I made the first jump, it was pretty easy from there,” she said. “It makes me feel really good and makes the team proud of me that I am contributing to our score on the board.”

In the Class B boys 4x200-meter relay, the Northern Cass Jaguars team of Matthew Hoppe, Keelan Monson, Trey Husar and Landon Moser set a new school record — with a time of 1 minute, 29.66 seconds — on their way to a state championship.

“It feels amazing,” said Jaguars senior Landon Moser. “We worked really hard for it this year just working on our handoffs and getting our handoffs down.

“Coming in, we knew we had a good chance of getting it and we just mentally prepared. That was our goal going in, we wanted to win it.”

Moser knew if he and junior teammate Trey Husar could have a clean handoff, everything else would fall into place.

“Trey came around the corner and I saw him about a step or two ahead of everyone,” Moser said. “I knew if we got the handoff that we had a good shot, so I just focused on getting a good handoff and trusted myself on the rest of it.”

In Class B boys triple jump, Husar (43 feet, 5.5 inches) finished runner-up to Kindred’s Presley Peraza (43 feet, 6.5 inches).

Peraza's championship jump was also a personal best by 10.5 inches.

“I feel great,” Peraza said. “It took me a while this year to get triple jump down and to finally knock the rust off. It started to all connect at the region meet and then today it just connected and I had some good jumps.”

Bowman County’s Taylor Wanner won the Class B boys 800-meter run with a time of 1 minute, 53.18 seconds, which broke a 39-year old record set in 1985 by Killdeer’s Paulo Costa.

With the 800 win, Wanner sealed up a sweep up the four events he ran, following victories in the 3,200- and 1,600-meter runs and the 4x800-meter relay.

“I just want to thank the Lord Jesus,” Wanner said. “Without him, I couldn’t have had the strength to get this all done. And all the support of my friends and family and teammates behind me, they always push me and make it all enjoyable.”

Bowman County also brought the Kindred Vikings’ run of team titles to an end, taking a boys team state championship to Bowman for the first time since 1993.

“We’ve gotten second the last three years to great Kindred teams,” Wanner said. “It’s always fun racing and competing against them. But this is something we’ve wanted for a long time. Our community is so supportive down in Bowman, no matter what sport it is.

“Bringing back the state title to Bowman will be something really special.”

The Vikings finished in second with Hazen in third.

Kindred senior Keaton Olson has been running alongside the Bowman County boys in cross country and track this year. Olson followed Wanner in second place in the 800.

“It’s awesome,” Olson said of the finish to his high school career. “Going into the state meet, I knew I was fit and knew I could compete. And I was in the first heat, the slower heat, for the 800 and so I just trusted myself and my coaches that I could go out and run a fast time. I never doubted it for a second.”

Reflecting on his time in Kindred, Olson said it’s not the running and competing that comes to mind.

“Honestly, it’s none of the running stuff,” he said. “It’s just the time with all my friends. The family we’ve created over the past few years is awesome. We’re as tight as brothers.”

Bowman County completed the Class B sweep with the girls also taking the team win, their first since 2008. Central Cass finished in second with Oak Grove in third.

Kindred’s Riley Sunram was named the NDHSCA Class B Boys Senior Athlete of the year while Carrington coach Greg Hoeckle and Bowman County coach Jon Jahner were named NDHSCA girls and boys coach of the year, respectively.
