The Porsche 911 Carrera RS for sale, built between 1973 and 1974, marks one of Porsche’s foundational racing car lines. The RS in its name is for Rennsport—German for “race sport,” which is in the Carrera’s blood. During its production run, only about 1,600 Carrera RS was manufactured.

The Carerra line of sportscars stems from a slew of Porsche victories in Mexico during the 1950s at the Carrera Panamericana competition. The 1973 911 Carrera RS succeeded the standard 911S with a larger 2.7L engine capable of 210 horsepower. These new Carrera engines were some of the first 911s to come with Bosch mechanical fuel injection for enhanced racing performance.

The 911 RS also had a revised, stiffened suspension, a conspicuous rear “ducktail” spoiler, larger brakes, wider rear wheels (since all of the engine weight is carried in the back), and snappy rear fenders. Together, these gave the 911 RS better handling and control on the racetrack than its 911 predecessors.

The 911 Carrera RS was offered in RS Touring and Sport Lightweight editions. The Sport Lightweight version of the Porsche RS for sale weighs about 220 lbs less than the standard model thanks to thinner gauge steel body parts and noticeably thinner glass. Both varieties of Porsche 911 RS came standard with wide Pirelli Cinturato CN36 tires.

In contrast to the 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS for sale, Porsche developed a turbocharged Carrera RSR 3.0 in 1974. Starting in December of 1973, Porsche installed a new, larger, fuel-injected 3.0L engine in the RSR capable of 230 horsepower. The 911 Carrera RSR was optimized for racing with even thinner steel body panels than the RS and a stripped-down, minimalist interior. These were primarily sold to racing teams and performed well for several of them in the 70s. In fact, a prototype of the Carrera RSR Turbo took home the second-place win at the 1974 24-hour Le Mans race.

Porsche enthusiasts love the Porsche 911 RS. It marks fundamental racing design risks and advances that have since continued to define the Porsche legacy and racing trajectory. Its distinctive styling and limited numbers make this car a coveted find. Even all these years later, this classic Porsche 911 Carrera RS still looks at home on a speedway or on the road. Regardless of where you decide to drive it, you’ll turn heads with the sound of that engine and those quintessential Porsche vintage details.
