Conversion Description

STEALTH & OFF GRID. Converted for multi use – camper van + day office + lugging stuff.
Insulated with Kingspan and recycled bottle insulation. Some sound deadening was attached prior to insulation.
Electrics – a Jackery 1000pro portable power pack. Charged 6 times max/ lifecycle is 500. ‘plug and play’ and portable – use in shed, garden or powercut.
TOTALLY INDEPENDANT of the van electrics, in warranty till June. Charge in the house, with the van battery when driving or by solar panel.
3x 12v plugs, USB a,b,c and 12v.
Lighting – led touch ceiling light, reading light by the bed, led strip light above sink.
2 usb sockets by the bed and desk/sink.
Sink and tap – rechargeable tap (charge lasts weeks), drain into container, sink with lid.
Bed – hexa ply storage unit specially made by Escapade Joinery and based on Plyguys ‘Torridon’. 1700mm long, width between 650-1000mm. Big pull-out rear draw takes 40kg and can also be used as pull out cook/work station. The front part is storage ( at the mo, Jackery is in there and there’s space for food, clothes etc)
The van layout is adaptable and modular, I didn’t want it full of tiny awkward laminated cupboards ! I wanted space so it can be a van that’s useful for moving lots of stuff but can also be a comfortable day van and camper. Everything can be unscrewed, it’s not full of glue like some vans ! (If and when repairs to the van are needed, a mechanic won’t need to rip the conversion apart). All the storage, the handmade hooks etc are ply treated with Osmo or painted. No mdf. The white storage walls are Ikea Skaddis with a range of movable hooks, clips, containers etc.
When sleeping in it I use the ply hooks with bags for clothes and food etc, with webbing to hold them back. This means the van isn’t full of ‘stuff’ when I’m using it day to day and there’s room for my work equipment, laptop etc.
The bulkhead and it’s steel bar have been left in, with a hole for access and security (with a neoprene blind that hooks on and off). I like the safety (risk of being rear ended and all the furniture and contents shoot forward) and the extra wall space it provides plus it’s ‘stealth van’ look. (the VW bulkhead is heavy duty plastic and easily removable, it has a strengthened steel bar that runs across the width which is important for safety, but is easily removed if you want to).
A Fiamma roofvent is ready to fit if the buyer wants it. I open the window a bit for ventilation, trims are on the front windows so noone can see that the window is open. I’ve not been able to decide whether to fit it.
I thought I’d also fit rear windows to make driving easier but there’s no need, the mirrors and sensors are enough. The lack of windows makes it v stealthy and cooler in the summer. I also don’t like loads of curtains, they get in the way, blow around, take up space and look naff/like a campervan.
I’ll supply photos and info to show how the van was converted, so you’ll know exactly what’s behind everything, what’s attached to what, where battens and wires are, what materials and components were used. I decided to organise the conversion myself because I couldn’t find the right van with the right layout for me and didn’t want to wait 18months and pay £12k for a conversion company to do it. I don’t want to calculate the hours of research let alone the work itself ! some of which I’ve done, some with help from other convertors, electricians and joiners I know. I’ve owned 3 vw campervans before this one, all the old Type 2 variety so have some experience and knowledge.
There’s no vapour barrier, after much research and discussion, I don’t believe in them – trapping moisture around metal will create rust, damp proofing in buildings is to stop damp getting in, damp isn’t going to get through metal into a van. Breathing creates moisture, again why trap it in the van ? Every van needs ventilation, vapour barriers make that need greater, imho.
The insulation however is important, not only to keep the cold out but to stop heat building up inside.

Beds Description

Fixed bed is 1700mm long. There’s also an extra 200mm space by the rear doors and 400mm space between the bed and bulkhead at the other end if you need more length.
650mm wide when ‘closed’ and can be pulled out to a width of 1000mm. Underneath is a heavy duty draw which is 900mm long and capable of taking 40kg of weight. At the front end is a cupboard (ref. photos). The cushions (fire retardant) are hand sewn by my Mum (!)
