  • sugar
  • water

Picking the Perfect Watermelon

My dad is incredibly good at picking the perfect watermelon. I’m getting better.

There are a few thing I look for when choosing a watermelon:

  1. A melon that is symmetrical and has a uniform shape.
  2. A big yellow spot on the bottom.
  3. A melon that feels heavy for its size, and has a hollow sound when tapped.

These criteria work pretty well for me, but I’ve also found that certain grocery stores have better watermelons than others.

How to Make

All right, it’s time for the drink. This is my take on a Watermelon Margarita. Let me tell you, if you like watermelon, it’s insanely delicious.

For your convenience, there is a full ingredient list and detailed instructions in the printable recipe card below.

  1. Begin by making a simple syrup. In a small saucepan, bring water, sugar, and orange zest to a boil, stirring constantly. Simmer for about 3 minutes. Remove from heat. Remove orange zest. Allow to cool completely.
  2. Place watermelon, tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, simply syrup and ice into a blender. Pulse until pureed.
  3. Put a small amount of salt (or sugar) on a saucer. Rub the edge or your glass with a lime wedge to moisten. Lightly dip the rim of the glass into the saucer to rim. Tap off excess salt (or sugar).
  4. Pour your margarita mixture into your rimmed glasses and garnish with a lime slice. I also love this drink because you can easily eliminate the liquor and salt rim and you have a really fabulous watermelon cooler.

This recipe makes two fairly large drinks. Using smaller glasses, you could probably get four servings.

Looks pretty refreshing, right? Trust me, it is! Now go whip up a batch and enjoy!

Unique Garnishes

Adding a beautiful garnish to your frozen watermelon margarita can take it from simply refreshing to a work of art. The perfect garnish not only adds visual appeal but can also enhance the flavors of the drink. Here are a few garnish ideas to take your margarita to the next level:

  1. Salted Watermelon Wedges: Cut small wedges of watermelon and sprinkle them with salt. Use these wedges to garnish the rim of your glass or simply drop a few into the drink itself.
  2. Lime Zest: Garnish the rim of your glass by dipping it in lime juice and then into a plate of lime zest. The zest adds a burst of citrus flavor and looks stunning against the bright pink color of the drink.
  3. Jalapeño Slices: For those who like a little bit of heat, add a few slices of jalapeño to the drink or use them to garnish the rim of the glass. This garnish adds a spicy kick that perfectly balances the sweetness of the watermelon and the tartness of the lime.

Recipe Notes

By selecting the freshest ingredients, your frozen watermelon margarita will be bursting with flavor. Remember, the quality of your ingredients can make or break a co*cktail. Luckily, with just a few key ingredients, you’ll be on your way to creating a drink that will impress even the most discerning of guests.

If you’re having trouble blending your margarita to the right consistency, try adding a splash of orange juice or water to thin it out. And if you find that your margarita is too sweet or too tart, adjust the amount of agave nectar or lime juice accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I use fresh watermelon instead of frozen?

A: Yes! You can use fresh watermelon chunks instead of frozen, but the texture may not be as smooth and slushy. You may need to add more ice to achieve the right consistency.

Q: Can I leave out the alcohol?

A: Sure! Make it a mocktail! Simply omit the tequila and triple sec and add in extra lime juice or watermelon juice for a non-alcoholic version.

Q: Can I make this margarita ahead of time?

A: While it’s best to enjoy your margarita right after making it, you can freeze any leftovers in a sealed container. Just give it a good stir or blend it up again before serving.

Q: Can I use a different fruit instead of watermelon?

A: Absolutely! This recipe works well with other frozen fruits like strawberries, blueberries, or pineapple. Experiment with different combinations to find your favorite flavor.
